Most of us here in Houston, TX are familiar with the museum district located downtown. We have already blogged recently about visionary plans that are in the works to transform our city. Well, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston is about to get a makeover – a $450 million dollar makeover.
Projected for completion in 2019, this master development will transform the museum as we know it, and the end result aims to make Houston’s museum district a cultural attraction to the city. By adding a few new buildings, landscaping upgrades, and even a restaurant, Steve Holl Architects of New York are excited to help improve the city’s cultural magnetism.
Of all of the renovations and additions in the works, the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building will be one of the most prominent and expensive, boasting of a $50 million price tag. With 54,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space, the Kinder Building will have amenities such as an amphitheater for over 200 guests, meeting rooms, seven gardens, and a café.
The re-design will add so much more visual appeal to the city’s district by connecting all of the different buildings. With the new rooftop garden and landscaping updates, this museum district will be very pedestrian friendly.
Stay tuned on our blog, as we hope to provide updates to this special project.
