With all the heavy rain in Houston lately, it seems to have improved the drought issue that has been on everyone’s minds. For the first time in almost three years, the entire state of Texas does not fall within the severe drought classification, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
In 2011, the state recorded the driest year on record, and it has taken years to recover the normalcy. The drought effected crop fields, cattle herds, and even the fishing grounds. But this spring, the heavy rains have filled up reservoirs to across the state. In fact, this year most of the state got twice the expected amount of rain for the first three weeks of May, and some areas got three times the expected amount.
Statewide, the reservoirs are 77 percent full as of this month, which is up from 65 percent about a year ago. Although Houston has shown drastic improvements, several areas around the state, like Austin or San Angelo, are still at critical drought levels.
