Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

It’s that time of year when extra calories find a way to sneak their way into your life very easily! Eggnog is in the fridge, the office is having a Christmas party, the church is having a potluck- food is in abundance. Well, we have a few tips for you to avoid gaining extra weight this holiday season while still being able to enjoy yourself.

Our first tip is to never arrive hungry to an event! This is a sure fire way to overindulge. Try to maintain some discipline by eating a small, healthy snack before heading to a holiday get-together. Also, a glass of water before eating at the party can help you curb overeating.

Next, remember that the party or event is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself by chewing slowly or putting your fork down between bites. This allows you to consciously realize how much you are eating and to actually enjoy the food experience.

Another important tip is exerting some portion control. If you are able to make your own plate, such as a buffet, be sure to get a small plate. This will not only help you be more particular about the foods you choose, but you will eat less overall.

Lastly, limit how many things you taste or sample. When you are cooking the holiday meal, it is tempting to taste and re-taste all of your dishes. But, this can add up the calories very quickly. If you are trying to be courteous and sample all the dishes at a party, try choosing just your favorites. Your favorite jeans will thank you later!
