Hot Topic: Is Walmart a Reality?

If you are from the Fulshear area, whether it’s Cross Creek Ranch, Fulbrook or Weston Lakes, you have probably heard about the plans for the new Walmart.  Construction is scheduled soon for the site that will be located on northeast corner of FM 1093 and FM 1463; which is located just east of the Fulshear City limits.

Numerous controversies over this issue have been hotly debated. Many residents feel that this new project will take away from the Fulshear area’s small town serenity and introduce a lesser desirable element to the area. Walmart spokesmen counters with their belief that this new Supercenter will bring needed conveniences and present commercialization opportunities for other businesses to seek root in Fulshear.

Walmart confirmed its plans on February 6th of this year stating that that “their intentions to proceed are still concrete”. According to Walmart’s Director of Communications, Anne Hatfield, Walmart Stores Inc., it is a “timely arrival because of the area’s booming real estate market”. Hatfield anticipates that once the Walmart is completed, then other businesses will domino sequentially.

Although Walmart is optimistic about their Supercenter becoming a reality, they face strong opposition from residents and the FAA alike.  The later poses a significant issue for Walmart because of the impact on the flight paths of Covey Trails; the airport directly across the road.   Unless stopped, the building process is set to begin this summer reaching completion in the spring or 2015. Other developmental possibilities include a 600-unit apartment complex and retail shops. The end goal for Walmart is to make this location a destination center for local residents with Walmart being the cornerstone.
