Katy’s Booming Population

Our neighbors in Katy, Texas are continuing to grow at exponential rates according to recent demographic reports. Representatives of the Katy community have prepared school districts that some of the campuses will have to use portable classrooms in parking lots to accommodate students. Even now, Morton Ranch High School and WoodCreek Junior High School together have over sixty-six classes held outside in portables, and this is only the beginning. Earlier this month, a $748 million dollar project was approved to help alleviate school overcrowding by building new schools and expanding current facilities.

The school district is not the only area feeling the pressure of the growing population, but land planning consultants claim that they cannot build enough lots to curb the growing demand. The Katy district tentatively plans to add at least 20,000 homes by 2018, which is supplemented by the fact that Houston area is leading in the state’s job growth numbers.

According to the CEO of the Katy Area Economic Development Council, Lance LaCour, the city of Houston will be larger than the city of Pittsburg in just two short years. He anticipates that the majority of the growth will occur with families who earn more than $100,000 a year, not to mention the housing pricing that are predicted to rise with this influx. Houston area representatives will continue to foresee the area’s growth and implement policy and structural changes to acclimate to the new population.
