Local Fulshear Group Quilts for Charity

On the first Monday of every month, women from a local church gather in Bob Lutz library in Fulshear for a few hours in the afternoon. They aren’t meeting for coffee or for late afternoon gossip. This group of ladies from the New Creation Lutheran Church in Fulshear are using their quilting skills to make a difference in the local and surrounding communities.

Because quilting and sewing are becoming lost pastimes, only a handful of women have the necessary skills, but they are currently welcoming and teaching others to help with this charitable project. The quilts made each month support Lutheran World Relief Baby Care Ministry, where a quilt is wrapped around hygiene items, baby clothes, diapers, and more.  These “quilt kits” are then sent to refugee centers, medical clinics, and disaster relief organizations that New Creation Lutheran supports. Each box even has a barcode so the church can see where area of the world their packages are.

In addition to supporting international needs, the quilting project also benefits local causes around our area. They donate quilts to the Women’s Center of Fort Bend County and the Katy Christian Ministry program, which helps women and children involved in domestic abuse situations. In a case that a child has to leave home without their belongings, they are greeted with a warm, comforting blanket.

The quilting women of New Creation Lutheran are always needing gently used fleece and cotton fabric or gently used infant and toddler clothing. Collection bins are available in the Irene Stern Community Center building and the Bob Lutz Library located in Fulshear. Information or directions for the next sewing session, call Marlene Oldham 281-646-0748.
