Preparing Your Lawn in the Fall

Although most people focus on their lawns during the spring, it is actually a common misconception that this is the prime time to pay your lawn some attention! Fall lawn care is vital to the sustainability and health of your grass in other seasons. Here are some great tips for caring for your grass during the fall and winter seasons:

  • Aeration

By providing some aeration for your lawn in the fall, it allows for new grass to spread without the rivalry of summer weeds. Aeration tools give the lawn access to more water, oxygen, and nutrients over the season. You can purchase a cheap hand aerator tool, similar to a pitchfork, or rent a gas-powered aerator machine to get the job done.

  • Seeding

Believe it or not, the low temperature of the fall is the perfect time to seed your lawn. You can get a 15lb bag of Kentucky Bluegrass seed for about fifty-five dollars – get the good stuff, don’t buy the cheapest option. Water the new seed for a minimum of 10 days to allow it to germinate.

  • Fertilization

Before the cold weather hits, fertilize your lawn with a product containing 10-15% phosphorus. This is critical root growth, and it will help your grass survive the harsh winter while also ensuring it will grow lush and green in the spring.

  • Mulch Your Leaves

Instead of raking your leaves up, try using your mower to turn them into mulch pieces. This will provide a safe haven of protection for your lawn against the winter winds. In addition, the leaves will decompose naturally to provide organic nutrients to grass roots.
