Whether you are looking to relocate for work or looking for a neighborhood to raise your kids, safety is a top consideration. The U.S. Smart Asset completed a study by looking at the 200 largest cities in the country and analyzing them on several key dynamics.
Smart Asset considered violent crime rate, vehicle mortality rate, drug poison mortality rate, population engaging in excessive drinking, air quality index, and commuters driving to work alone. After ranking each city be these six factors, they averaged those rankings in order to determine which of the nation’s cities were safest.
The Top 10 Safest Cities were:
- Sunnyvale, California
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Bellevue, Washington
- Cary, North Carolina
- Alexandria, Virginia
- San Jose, California
- McAllen, Texas
- Fremont, California
- Salem, Oregon
- Frisco, Texas
According to the results, the Bay Area, generally speaking is one of the safest areas overall. Three Bay Area cities rank among the top 10 safest, led by Sunnyvale at number one. In general, cities in the Bay Area have low violent crime rates, low rates of drug use and relatively low rates of deadly traffic accidents.
Texas was close behind the Bay Area, with three of our cities in the top 11, and five of our cities in the top 25. Places like McAllen and Frisco have some of the lowest violent crime rates in the U.S.
The poorest results were yielded from the Northeast. No city in this area rank among the nation’s safest.
