Ways to Save on Your Energy Bill This Winter

We have compiled a list of money saving strategies for your energy bill during the cooler winter months. Even a small effort can make a big difference in savings!

  • Cover Your Windows & Seal Leaks

By simply applying a thick, plastic sheet to your windows to help shield your home from chilly drafts. Many types of window treatments and coverings can help improve energy efficiency. Check your home for any air leaks, such as the doorway, and be sure to seal these leaks.

  • Changing the Temperature

When you are at home, try to keep the thermostat as low as you can while still being comfortable. During the night hours or while you are out of the home, turn the thermostat back about 10-15 degrees. This eight hour or so period can actually save you 10% on your energy bill for the entire year.

  • Adjust Your Fan

Although using your fan during the winter may seem counterproductive, it actually can help maximize the heat in your home. Most ceiling fans have a switch that makes the motor reverse, in a clockwise direction. With the fan on a low speed, this gentle updraft will pull the warmer air from the ceiling down to a lower level.

  • Adjust Your Water Heater

Believe it or not, your water heating can attribute to 15%-25% of your energy bill. You can still get warm showers this winter, but turn the setting down to “warm,” about 120 degrees Fahrenheit to increase your energy savings.
